Monkey at floating market
The scene on the dial is that of the female monkey paddling on a small boat to sell fruits. It depicts the livelihood of Thai people in the past that settled down along the river banks. The river was used as the main logistics and trading of products. In the old days, most vendors were female since the men had to become the civil servants which is why we use the term “Mae Ka” or female vendors. We call the Chinese men who travelled to the country to sell goods “Poh Ka” or male vendors. The floating market is, therefore, a good representation of the livelihood, movement, and social context of people along the river banks. At present, there are replicas of the floating market from the past to conserve and promote tourism such as   Amphawa Floating Market, Damnoen Saduak Floating Market which brings back the vibrant vibe of Thai livelihood.
